"Mom, why is that person fat?"

As a parent, it is important to teach your kids about fat bodies in a way that promotes body positivity, inclusivity, and respect for all body types. Here are some tips for teaching your kids about fat bodies:

  1. Avoid weight stigma: It is important to avoid negative comments about weight or body size, as this can contribute to weight stigma and body shame. Instead, emphasize that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and that there is no one "right" body type.

  2. Focus on health, not weight: Instead of focusing on weight as an indicator of health, teach your kids about the importance of healthy habits such as regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and eating a balanced diet. Emphasize that health is about feeling good and taking care of your body, rather than conforming to a certain body size.

  3. Encourage body positivity: Teach your kids about body positivity and the importance of loving and accepting their own bodies as well as others. Emphasize that everyone is deserving of respect and kindness, regardless of their body size or shape.

  4. Challenge stereotypes and biases: Encourage your kids to challenge stereotypes and biases about fat bodies that they may encounter in media or in their social circles. Teach them to recognize and call out fatphobia and to be an ally to those who are marginalized because of their body size.

By teaching your kids about fat bodies in a positive, inclusive, and respectful way, you can help them develop a healthy relationship with their own bodies and with others.

Personally, I loved the book Shapesville to shift focus from valuing appearances to valuing interests.
